What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It literally "bridges" the gap left by a missing tooth, using the teeth on either side of the gap — called abutment teeth — as anchors. The artificial tooth or teeth in the middle are called pontics. According to the American Dental Association, bridges can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials, with porcelain being most popular for its natural appearance.

At Gentle Family Dentistry in Hampton, NH, we provide tooth-colored porcelain bridges that blend beautifully with your natural smile. Unlike dentures, a traditional bridge is permanently cemented and can only be removed by your dentist.

Why Replace a Missing Tooth?

A missing tooth is more than a cosmetic concern. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth begin to shift toward the empty space over time, disrupting your bite alignment. The bone beneath the missing tooth also begins to deteriorate due to lack of stimulation. These changes can lead to difficulty chewing, speech changes, jaw problems, and increased risk of decay in the shifted teeth.

The Bridge Procedure

Getting a bridge typically requires two visits. At the first appointment, the abutment teeth are prepared by removing a thin layer of enamel to make room for the crowns that will anchor the bridge. Impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory where your custom bridge is fabricated. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth while you wait.

At the second appointment (usually 2–3 weeks later), the temporary bridge is removed and your permanent bridge is carefully fitted, adjusted, and cemented in place. Dr. Li ensures the fit is precise and the bite is comfortable before finalizing the placement.

Implant-Supported Bridges

For patients missing multiple consecutive teeth, an implant-supported bridge offers a superior alternative to a traditional bridge. Instead of relying on natural teeth as anchors, the bridge is supported by dental implants placed in the jawbone. This approach preserves the surrounding natural teeth and provides the added benefit of stimulating the jawbone to prevent bone loss.

Dr. Li will discuss all your options — traditional bridge, implant bridge, or partial denture — so you can make the most informed decision for your health and lifestyle.

Caring for Your Bridge

The key to a long-lasting bridge is maintaining healthy abutment teeth and gums. Brush twice daily and use a floss threader or water flosser to clean under the bridge (standard floss cannot reach beneath the pontic). Avoid chewing very hard or sticky foods that could dislodge the bridge. With proper care, a well-made bridge can last 10–15 years or longer.
