What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone, where it acts as an artificial tooth root. Over the course of several months, the implant undergoes a process called osseointegration — it fuses directly with the surrounding bone, creating a stable, permanent anchor. Once fully integrated, a custom-made porcelain crown is attached on top, completing the restoration.
The result looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth. You bite, chew, speak, and smile with complete confidence. Most patients say they forget the implant is even there.
Benefits of Implants Over Bridges & Dentures
Dental implants are widely considered the gold standard for tooth replacement — and for good reason:
- No reduction of adjacent teeth. Unlike a traditional bridge, implants do not require grinding down healthy neighboring teeth to serve as supports.
- Prevents bone loss. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone beneath it begins to shrink. An implant stimulates the bone just like a natural root, halting that deterioration.
- Permanently fixed. Implants do not slip, click, or need to be removed at night like dentures.
- Long-lasting. With proper care, implants routinely last 20 years or more — often a lifetime.
- Easy to clean. You brush and floss an implant crown exactly the same way you would a natural tooth — no special solutions or adhesives required.
Are You a Candidate?
Most adults who are missing one or more teeth are good candidates for dental implants. Ideal candidates have:
- Adequate bone density in the jaw to support the implant post
- Healthy gums free of active periodontal disease
- Good overall health sufficient to undergo a minor surgical procedure
- A commitment to proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits
Patients with diabetes, smokers, or those with certain medical conditions may still be excellent candidates. Dr. Li conducts a thorough evaluation — including digital X-rays and a clinical exam — to determine the best approach for your individual situation.
The Implant Process
Getting a dental implant is a multi-step process that unfolds over several months, allowing your body to heal properly at each stage.
- Step 1 — Consultation & Planning. Dr. Li reviews your X-rays and oral health, discusses your goals, and creates a personalized treatment plan. If bone grafting is needed to build up the implant site, it is planned at this stage.
- Step 2 — Implant Placement. The titanium post is placed into the jawbone in a minor outpatient surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia. Most patients are comfortable and return to normal activities within a day or two.
- Step 3 — Healing & Osseointegration. Over the next three to six months, the implant fuses with your jawbone. A temporary restoration may be provided during this period.
- Step 4 — Crown Placement. Once osseointegration is complete, impressions are taken and a custom porcelain crown is fabricated and attached to the implant. Your new tooth is complete.
