What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a modern orthodontic system that uses a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners to gradually straighten your teeth — without the metal brackets and wires of traditional braces. Each set of aligners is worn for approximately 1–2 weeks, gently shifting your teeth into position according to a precise treatment plan. Dr. Bei Li is a certified Invisalign provider at Gentle Family Dentistry in Hampton, NH.

According to the American Dental Association, orthodontic treatment — including clear aligners — is not only a cosmetic treatment. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of decay and gum disease. A healthy bite also reduces wear on teeth and strain on jaw joints.

What Conditions Does Invisalign Treat?

Invisalign can address a wide range of orthodontic concerns, including:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Spaced or gapped teeth
  • Overbite, underbite, and crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Mild to moderate misalignment

Complex cases with severe bite problems may still require traditional orthodontic treatment or combination therapy. Dr. Li will evaluate your teeth and bite at a complimentary consultation to determine if Invisalign is right for you.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign requires photos and impressions submitted to Invisalign company to create simulation videos. Using Invisalign's proprietary software, Dr. Li maps out a step-by-step treatment plan showing exactly how your teeth will move from their current position to their ideal final position. You'll be able to see a preview of your expected result before treatment even begins.

Your custom series of aligners is then fabricated. Each aligner applies gentle, controlled pressure to specific teeth. You switch to the next aligner in the series every 1–2 weeks, with check-in appointments every 6–8 weeks to monitor your progress and provide the next sets of aligners.

Benefits of Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

  • Nearly invisible: Aligners are clear — most people won't notice you're wearing them
  • Removable: Remove aligners to eat, drink anything other than water, brush, and floss — no food restrictions
  • Comfortable: No metal brackets or wires to irritate your cheeks and gums
  • Predictable: Digital treatment planning lets you see your projected results upfront
  • Fewer office visits: Check-in appointments are typically shorter than traditional braces adjustments

Invisalign for Adults and Teens

The ADA notes that orthodontic treatment is no longer associated only with children and teenagers — today many adults seek orthodontic care to correct long-standing problems or retreatment after shifting. Invisalign is particularly popular among adults because of its discreet appearance. Invisalign Teen includes compliance indicators and accommodates erupting teeth.

After Invisalign: Retainers

After completing your Invisalign treatment, retainers are essential to maintain your results. Teeth have a natural tendency to shift back toward their original positions — retainers prevent this. Dr. Li will provide custom retainers and advise you on how long and how often to wear them.
