What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown — sometimes called a cap — is a custom-made restoration that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, from the gumline up. According to the American Dental Association, crowns restore a tooth to its normal shape, size, and strength while improving its appearance. They are one of the most versatile and commonly used restorations in dentistry.

When Is a Crown Needed?

Dr. Li may recommend a crown when:

  • A tooth has a large cavity that is too extensive for a filling
  • A tooth is cracked, fractured, or severely worn
  • A tooth has been weakened by root canal therapy
  • A dental implant needs a visible restoration placed on top
  • A tooth has severe discoloration or poor shape that affects function
  • A dental bridge needs to be anchored to adjacent teeth

Traditional Crown Process

For cases where a traditional lab-fabricated crown is preferred, the process involves two visits. At the first appointment, Dr. Li prepares the tooth, takes impressions, and places a temporary crown. At the second visit (usually 2–3 weeks later), the permanent crown is fitted, adjusted, and cemented in place.

Traditional crowns are available in porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), and full-metal (for back teeth under high chewing forces).

Caring for Your Crown

A well-placed crown can last 15 years or longer with proper care. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss around the crown daily, and avoid chewing on ice or very hard foods. If you grind your teeth, Dr. Li may recommend a custom fitted nightguard to protect your investment. Regular checkups allow us to monitor the crown and the underlying tooth for any issues.
