What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide — commonly known as laughing gas — is a colorless, odorless gas that has been used safely in dentistry for well over a century. When mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small, comfortable mask placed over the nose, it induces a state of relaxation and mild euphoria that makes dental treatment significantly easier for anxious patients. According to the American Dental Association, nitrous oxide is one of the safest and most widely used sedation options in dentistry.
At Gentle Family Dentistry in Hampton, NH, we offer nitrous oxide for patients of all ages — children and adults alike — who experience dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still for extended procedures, or simply prefer to feel more comfortable during treatment.
How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?
The gas is delivered through a small nasal mask. Within just a few minutes of breathing normally through the nose, most patients begin to feel its effects: a warm, tingling sensation, light-headedness, and a general sense of calm and well-being. You remain fully conscious, able to hear and respond to Dr. Li throughout the appointment — you simply feel more relaxed and less aware of anxiety or discomfort.
The concentration of nitrous oxide is adjusted throughout the procedure to maintain your comfort level. As soon as the mask is removed at the end of treatment, the effects dissipate quickly — typically within a few minutes of breathing normal room air. Unlike oral sedation or IV sedation, you do not need a driver and can return to your normal activities shortly after your appointment.

Is Nitrous Oxide Safe?
Nitrous oxide has an excellent safety record and is considered one of the safest forms of sedation used in dentistry. It is non-allergenic, non-irritating to the lungs, and rapidly eliminated from the body. The ADA and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both endorse its appropriate use for anxiety management in dental patients.
Dr. Li will review your medical history before recommending nitrous oxide. It is generally not recommended for patients in the first trimester of pregnancy, those with certain respiratory conditions, or individuals who have difficulty breathing through the nose.
Who Benefits from Nitrous Oxide?
- Patients with dental anxiety or phobia
- Children who are nervous about dental treatment
- Patients undergoing longer procedures (extractions, root canals, multiple fillings)
- Patients with a sensitive gag reflex
- Patients who have had traumatic dental experiences in the past
- Anyone who wants to feel more comfortable and relaxed during treatment
What to Expect
Before your appointment, eat a light meal — a full stomach can occasionally cause nausea with nitrous oxide. Wear comfortable clothing and breathe normally through your nose throughout the procedure. You'll feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable — and you may even find yourself looking forward to dental visits in the future. After the mask is removed, breathe normal air for a few minutes until any residual effects have cleared.
Nitrous oxide does not eliminate the need for local anesthesia — if an injection is needed for your procedure, Dr. Li will still administer it. But many patients find that when they're relaxed from the nitrous, the injection feels like nothing at all.
